19 May 2016
Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited Joko Widodo to take part in the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on 2–3 September this year, according to a Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East press release.
In the first quarter of 2016, Russia and Indonesia saw a more than 14% jump in their mutual trade volumes, Indonesia being one of the main trading partners of Russia’s Far East.
Indonesia’s President stressed that cooperation between Russia and Indonesia in the spheres of economics, politics and culture should be developed and he noted that the current volume of mutual trade did not comply with the two countries’ potential.
During the dialogue between the two states, the question was discussed of setting up a free trade zone between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Community, as were projects in the sphere of oil refining. Joko Widodo highly appraised Russian investments in major projects in Indonesia in the marine and infrastructure development spheres.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the Eastern Economic Forum.
