24 January 2017
A meeting has taken place in Moscow between Russian Presidential Advisor Anton Kobyakov and Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Rashid Alimov. Topics discussed during the meeting included potential areas for collaboration between SCO member states in the context of the major political and economic events scheduled to be held in Russia in 2017.
Russia will chair the Council of Heads of Government of the SCO Member States in 2017. A meeting of prime ministers under Russia’s chairmanship is planned for late November or early December. Russia will also host the SCO Summit in 2020. This year, the event will take place from June 8 to 9 in the Kazakh capital Astana.
During the meeting, Rashid Alimov confirmed his participation in the upcoming St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will be held from June 1 to 3, and in a panel session devoted to matters of economic cooperation within the SCO. The event is being organized by Russia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry in coordination with the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Roscongress Foundation. Alimov also plans to take part in the Eastern Economic Forum, which will be held on September 6–7 in Vladivostok.
Underscoring the importance of cooperation between Russia and the SCO, Anton Kobyakov noted: “Today we have in place and in operation all of the mechanisms and tools we need to work together tirelessly in the interests of sustainable development. I am certain that SCO member states will continue to play an active role in the variety of multilateral events set to be held in Russia.”
Rashid Alimov supported Russia’s initiative to create a ‘club’ of regional leaders from SCO states. He invited the author of this initiative, Governor of Chelyabinsk Region Boris Dubrovsky, to give a presentation at the SCO Secretariat in Beijing. In turn, Dubrovsky invited Alimov to visit his region.
Summing up, the participants of the meeting emphasized the importance of collaboration on the forum circuit as well as cooperation in other formats.
